Creepy crawly specialist and sports people hike to help animals

As the RandWest SPCA is always in need of help from the community to be able to continue with their work in the community, a group of people organised a hike with the proceeds going to the town’s SPCA.
Randfontein scorpion and snake expert, Jonathan Leeming in partnership with RandMark Sports Club arranged a hike as a fundraiser for the RandWest SPCA that took place on Saturday, November 27 in Magaliesburg.
“Lockdown has been a tough time for many of us. It has been a time to be grateful for what we have, instead of wishing for things we do not have. That disposable income we used to support a good cause is no more, and charities are battling more than ever to provide the community services that we all just take for granted,” said Jonathan.
The costs of this event were kindly covered by SupaQuick Randfontein.
Jonathan explained that they left their cars at the foothills of the Magaliesburg Mountains and hiked for approximately 14km to Castle Gorge.
“The route chosen was an adventurous hike to Boer War ruins on the cliff edge, then through the rugged terrain and rock formations to a mountain pool for a rest. Then it was off to the head of Castle Gorge before descending to the bottom of the falls via a steep and wet scramble. The rain began to fall, so we headed across country to a nearby ox-wagon track. We followed the track into the mountains, around the cliffs and back down a steep and wet decent back to the cars.”
In addition to the money raised by the hike being donated to the SPCA, Jonathan will donate R50 for every copy that is sold of his latest and award-winning book called ‘One World’ to the RandWest SPCA until Saturday, December 11.
“It has been a tough year for many organisations but especially for community charities such as the SPCA. SupaQuick is honoured to partner with Jonathan Leeming and support this initiative for our local community,” said Jan-Hendrick Visser, owner of SupaQuick Randfontein.
Karin Bezuidenhout said that it was unbelievable that such a beautiful area was only an hour’s drive from Johannesburg.
“A big thanks you to everyone who joined the hike, although the weather was a bit intimidating. Their support of this event raised much-needed funds for the RandWest SPCA. I would like to thank RandMark Sports Club for helping to support this event, it’s member for supporting the event, and SupaQuick for the financial support,” said Jonathan.
