Décor for your home this Christmas
Real estate company shares a few tips on how to select the best décor for your home this festive season.

As the festive season approaches, some homeowners might be struggling to hold themselves back from infusing the spirit of the season into every corner of the home. Those who are hoping to create the most memorable Christmas décor for their home should start by carefully contemplating the colour palette.
Whether a homeowner is aiming to create a traditional look with classic reds and greens or opting for a more modern theme with metallic and neutrals, choosing the right colours can significantly impact the overall ambience of the space.
To help homeowners get this right, RE/MAX of Southern Africa shared a few tips on how to select the best seasonal décor for your home.
• Complement existing décor
Rather than choosing colours that clash with the curtains and fight for attention against the furniture, select complementary colours that will enhance your home’s existing décor. Decide whether you would prefer more subtle décor or whether you want your decorations to stand out. When going the more subtle route, try to find tones or shades that will blend in with the rest of the home’s colour pallet. If you want your decorations to sing, then go for the bold, bright colours if the rest of your home is more neutral or add crisp whites and metallic if the rest of your home is filled with bright colours.
• Pick your theme
The best way to avoid a mixed-up mess of decorations is to decide in advance what style or theme you would prefer. There are so many styles to choose from, whether it is traditional, rustic, modern, or an eclectic theme. It can help to consider the style of your home to make sure that your festive decorations will complement the architecture. Traditional décor will look even better in an older home, while the more modern, neutral styles will look great in a contemporary space.
• Research trends and find inspiration
Before you set up all your decorations, take the time to find some inspiration. There might be some current trends from which you could draw inspiration. Social media has a host of free ideas of every kind of style and theme. Choose the elements that resonate with you and suit your existing décor.
• Work with what you have
Setting up the same set of decorations each year can start to get stale. Give your old décor a fresh feel simply by introducing a handful of new elements into your festive trinkets. Set aside the decorations that will no longer work with the new style or see if there is a way to modify them (possibly by spray-painting them in a new colour).
However, you choose to decorate the space, make sure that whatever you select suits your personal aesthetic and helps the space feel even more like home to you. Often the most memorable holiday décor is not the most carefully curated design, but rather the ones that feel most inviting, and warm, and reflect the homeowner’s personality.
If you haven’t yet found a place that feels like home to you, then perhaps a new house should be added to your Christmas wish list.
“Speak to a local agent to start exploring your options – you’ll never know what’s out there until you start searching,” advised Adrian Goslett, Regional Director and CEO of RE/MAX of Southern Africa.
