Is your toddler ready for a big bed?
From climbing out of the cot to following bedtime rules, experts share the key signs your toddler may be ready to make the move to a ‘big’ bed.
Many parents wonder when the right time is to move their toddler from a cot to a bed. Is there a specific age to make the change, or is it time once your little one starts climbing out of the cot?
According to MomJunction.com, most toddlers are ready to transition to a bed between 18 months and four years of age, although experts suggest that waiting until closer to three years old is often the better option.
While age is a useful guideline, every child develops differently. Instead of focusing only on age, parents should also consider whether their child has reached certain developmental milestones before making the transition.
Signs your toddler may be ready
• They have outgrown the cot: If your toddler is getting too tall for the cot, with their head or feet reaching the ends, it may be time to consider a bigger bed.
• They keep climbing out: Children who frequently climb out of their cot may be ready for the next step. Before making the move, parents can try lowering the mattress to its lowest setting if possible, as this may safely delay the transition.
• Potty training is approaching: Experts recommend avoiding two major milestones at the same time. Moving to a toddler bed before beginning potty training can make the process easier, as tackling both together may overwhelm some children and slow their progress.
• They understand boundaries: Before introducing a toddler bed, it is important to see whether your child understands simple boundaries, even without physical barriers. One way to assess this is by letting them nap on a supervised bed with pillows placed around them to observe how much they move during sleep. Parents should never leave a child unattended during this exercise.
If your toddler frequently rolls or jumps off the bed, it may be better to wait a little longer before making the switch.
• They ask for a bigger bed: Some toddlers begin asking for a bed like an older sibling’s or show that they no longer enjoy sleeping in a cot. If your child can clearly express that they want a bigger bed, it may be a sign they are emotionally ready for the change. Safety precautions should remain a priority.
• A new baby is arriving: If another baby is on the way, experts advise only moving an older child into a toddler bed if they are developmentally ready, generally after the age of two. Introducing the change one or two months before the baby’s arrival gives toddlers time to adjust without feeling replaced or pressured.
• They can follow bedtime rules: Unlike cots, toddler beds do not have rails that keep children contained. Before making the switch, parents should consider whether their child can follow simple bedtime rules, settle themselves to sleep, stay in bed through the night and show enough self-control to remain safe.
When to wait
Although moving to a toddler bed is an exciting milestone, there are situations where delaying the transition may be the better choice.
Parents may want to postpone the move if:
• their child is ill or anxious about sleeping alone
• bedtime is regularly a struggle or the child wakes frequently during the night
• the child cannot yet self-soothe or settle themselves to sleep
• a new baby is due soon, but the toddler is not yet developmentally ready
• potty training is already underway
• the child has recently started attending daycare, or
• the family is preparing to move house
Waiting until the timing is right can help make the transition smoother for both toddlers and parents, creating a safer and more positive sleep experience.
