Child (2) found dead in manhole

An investigation is underway after a toddler's body was found in a manhole over the weekend.

The lifeless body of a two-year-old boy was found inside a manhole in Mohlakeng on Saturday, January 25.

The exact circumstances surrounding the incident are currently under investigation.

Rand West City Local Municipality (RWCLM) has since visited the family to share their condolences. RWCLM members included the mayor William Matsheke, deputy mayor Nontombi Molatlhegi, council speaker Selina Moumakwe and chief whip councillor Mkhuseli Jokazi.

According to a statement issued by RWCLM, during the visit on Sunday, January 26, Matsheke also held an impromptu community meeting with the residents of Mohlakeng Ext 11 to address concerns regarding the tragic incident.

“A broader community meeting will be held today (January 28) to discuss pressing service delivery issues and provide updates on the ongoing investigation into the matter. The municipality extends its heartfelt condolences to the family during this difficult time and assures support,” Matsheke said.

The statement further stated the municipality is committed to supporting the family by deploying a team of social workers to provide guidance. Also, they will work closely with the police to ensure a thorough investigation is carried out.

The family of the deceased child did not want to speak to the media at this time.
