Man shoots dog several times, then leaves it to die

A disturbing incident unfolded in Loumarina when a man reportedly shot his dog several times and left it to die.

The Randfontein Herald arrived at a gruesome scene in Loumarina on Sunday, November 23, where a man allegedly shot his dog several times before leaving it to die in a wheelbarrow.

A neighbour, who wished to remain anonymous, said she heard multiple gunshots around noon while playing outside with her children.

“My children asked, ‘Mommy, can we help the dog?’ I immediately took them inside before calling the police,” she said.

Community Policing Forum (CPF) member Travis McGregor said he arrived shortly after the incident and found the dog lying in a wheelbarrow.

“I spoke to the man, who asked if someone could fetch the dog. He was arrested for discharging a firearm,” McGregor told the Herald.

Police on the scene confirmed the arrest and said the case would be investigated as animal cruelty. The Rand West SPCA also attended and removed the dog.

An update on the case will follow.
