Police arrest over 700 suspects in West Rand blitz

A massive weekend crackdown across Gauteng nets hundreds of wanted suspects and clears drugs and stolen vehicles off local streets.

A multidisciplinary Operation Shanela II resulted in hundreds of arrests across the West Rand District over the weekend, targeting suspects wanted for serious crimes and addressing various criminal activities.

According to Gauteng SAPS spokesperson Colonel Dimakatso Nevhuhulwi, Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant General Tommy Mthombeni and Deputy Provincial Commissioner for Policing Major General Fred Kekana led the operation.

The operation commenced on Friday, October 23, with overnight tracing operations conducted by detectives targeting suspects wanted for various serious offences.

The suspect-tracing operation resulted in the arrest of 763 wanted suspects for crimes including murder, attempted murder, rape and assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.

Among those arrested were 158 suspects wanted for crimes committed against women and children, highlighting the continued focus on addressing gender-based violence and crimes against vulnerable members of society.

On Saturday, October 24, police continued their efforts with a roadblock on Randfontein Road, where several arrests were made.

The roadblock resulted in the arrest of 27 people for driving under the influence of alcohol, eight people suspected of being in the country illegally, and 12 suspects for possession of drugs. One suspect was also arrested for possession of a stolen vehicle.

Nevhuhulwi said the operation demonstrated police efforts to combat crime through co-ordinated operations and targeted enforcement.
