Rand West City sounds alarm over payment scams

Residents are warned to be on the lookout for scamsters posing as municipal meter auditors and demanding payment.

Residents are being urged to stay alert after Rand West City Local Municipality warned of scams involving individuals posing as meter auditors and demanding payment.

According to municipal spokesperson Phillip Montshiwa, reports have emerged of residents being approached by people claiming to conduct meter audits on behalf of the municipality and requesting cash or electronic payments.

Montshiwa stressed that auditors are not allowed to collect money under any circumstances, regardless of whether they claim to be municipal employees or contractors.

“Any amounts due on a customer’s municipal account must only be paid at the municipality’s official cashier points or through approved municipal payment channels. Residents are also advised to always request and keep an official receipt for any payment made,” he said.

He warned that the municipality does not record payments made directly to auditors and will not reflect on municipal accounts, potentially leaving residents out of pocket.

“This matter must be treated with urgency. Residents are urged to remain vigilant and immediately report any auditor or individual who requests direct payment or banking details,” Montshiwa added.

The municipality has cautioned that it cannot be held responsible for losses suffered as a result of unauthorised payments and is appealing to the community to help curb the spread of scams.

Residents who are unsure about the legitimacy of an audit or wish to report suspicious activity can contact the municipality on 011 411 5000.

“Please note that meter audits are a free service, and no resident is expected to pay any official for services rendered,” Montshiwa concluded.
