SPCA secures major victory in animal abuse case
A Waterval property owner has been found guilty on six counts of animal cruelty, marking a significant win for the RandWest SPCA and the animals rescued.
The RandWest SPCA celebrated a major victory after a Waterval property owner was found guilty on six counts of animal cruelty.
Complaints first emerged in 2023 regarding pigs being kept in severely compromised conditions, with reports of animals dying.
According to Inspector Rene van Straten, the organisation investigated and identified multiple serious welfare concerns affecting several animals. Warnings were issued, and although initial improvements were seen, the situation was closely monitored.
“A dog was also found confined in a bird cage heavily infested with faeces to the extent that it contaminated the dog’s food and water,” Van Straten said.

When inspectors revisited the property, they found conditions had drastically worsened, prompting decisive action. A warrant was obtained to rescue the animals, a process made difficult by the owners’ hostility, including personal attacks, threats, and even physical aggression toward the inspectors.
A criminal case with six counts of animal cruelty was opened. On February 11, the SPCA provided detailed testimonies regarding the conditions the animals endured.
On March 13, the accused was found guilty on all charges of contravening the Animals Protection Act, which can result in 45 months in prison. Sentencing is expected to take place within the next two months
“The case marks a significant victory for the SPCA. We are incredibly proud of this achievement and extend our sincere gratitude to the prosecutors who handled the case with professionalism and dedication. We remain committed to fighting for those who cannot speak for themselves and hope to see many more successful convictions like this in the future,” Van Straten said.
