Municipalities showcase their gaming talents

Rand West City Libraries hosted an Esports event at the Westonaria Banquet Hall in partnership with several municipalities.

Rand West City Libraries recently hosted an Xbox FIFA gaming tournament where various municipality representatives went head-to-head at Westonaria’s Banquet Hall.

The municipalities involved include Mogale City, Lesedi and Midvaal not to mention the Gauteng Department of Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation.

According to Rand West City’s programme librarian Thandeka Legae, each municipality selected four players to make a total of 16 participants. Each player participated in one match called knockouts with a total of eight minutes per game.

The prizes.

“It was a first of its kind in the country where municipalities would compete against each other in an event like this,” said Thandeka.

The players were introduced to the rules and were briefed on how the games would be played. After the games, the players were also workshopped on how libraries work, introduced to library services and given a chance to ask any questions related to libraries and make suggestions on how libraries could help the communities.

All players were given certificates of participation and promotional material to thank them for being part of the event.
The winner received a full Xbox console and a winner’s trophy while the runner-up received a tablet and a trophy.

Lesedi Municipality received first place and was rewarded a floating trophy which will be defended again during the next event. The refreshments and prizes were all provided by the Gauteng Department of Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation.
