Action demanded in Robin Park over ongoing water crisis

Robin Park residents are frustrated by persistent water cuts as Councillor Tewie Botha calls out the municipality’s handling of the crisis.

Residents in parts of Ward 9 have been without a consistent water supply for nearly three months, prompting growing frustration and concern among the community.

Ward councillor Tewie Botha has expressed his dismay over the ongoing issue, which he says has severely disrupted daily life.

Botha explained that the Rand West City Local Municipality (RWCLM) restricts both the volume of water and the hours it is pumped, resulting in regular shortages.

He noted that when reservoir levels drop below 30%, the water supply is shut off – often at night – leaving residents without water until the following morning, despite new pumps being installed earlier this year.

“Residents cannot get ready for work or school. We also have a hospital in the area,” said Botha.

He further criticised the municipality for failing to communicate with residents and for not providing a schedule to warn them of water restrictions.

“The residents who faithfully pay their rates and taxes are the ones whose access to water is being cut. It’s becoming a blatant human rights violation,” Botha stated.

He added that the RWCLM owes money to Rand Water and, although an agreement was made to repay the debt monthly, the municipality is not adhering to it.

Botha also questioned why the two large reservoirs in Westonaria remain at 70 to 80% capacity while the Greenhills reservoir only reaches about 40%.

Meanwhile, residents of Ward 9 signed a petition on September 27 demanding that their right to water be respected.

The RWCLM was approached for comment regarding the issues raised. No response was received at the time of publication; however, feedback will be published once received.
