New meter poles aim to prevent tampering

Rand West City Local Municipality has officially appointed a company to carry out a project relocating electrical meters.

The Office of the Municipal Manager announced that Rand West City Local Municipality (RWCLM) has appointed a company to move and replace existing electrical meters from inside properties to protective poles outside.

The objective of the project is to protect municipal revenue and also prevent illegal tampering. There will also be no cost to residents unless they find the meter has been tampered with.

“We want to reiterate that tampering with meters is a criminal offence and fines will be issued to homeowners who are found guilty of this offence,” Municipal Manager Thabo Ndlovu warned.

Ndlovu continued that the municipality has officially appointed SME Group to conduct the inspections and audits of the existing meters and also replace and relocate the meters to the protective poles.

For more information, the following municipal officials can be contacted:

• Assistant electrical manager, Mike Mkhatshwa, on 071 133 8429
• Meter technician, Hope Mufamadi on 072 231 2581
• SME Group field technician on 072 797 5620

“We appreciate your co-operation and understanding during the implementation of this essential project,” Ndlovu concluded.
