Rand West City halts water pumping as reservoir levels reach critical lows

Residents in parts of Rand West City are being urged to conserve water because critically low reservoir levels and a failed water pump are affecting water supply in several areas.

The Rand West City Local Municipality has temporarily shut off water pumping to allow depleted reservoirs to recover following critical supply challenges across the area

Pumping was halted at 12:00 today, October 8, with supply expected to resume at approximately 17:00, depending on system recovery and reservoir levels.

Critically low levels reported

Water levels at several local reservoirs have dropped drastically:

• Greenhills Reservoir: 0%
• Finsbury Reservoir: 20%
• Westergloor Reservoir: 50%
• Badirile Reservoir: 80%

Emergency valve isolation under way

Alongside the pumping pause, technical teams are executing emergency valve isolations following a water pump failure at the water tower. Municipal officials stated that this intervention is necessary to stabilise the disruption system and restore managed distribution.

Affected areas

Residents in Westergloor, Greenhills, Toekomsrus, Mohlakeng, Finsbury, Dan Tloome, Randfontein, and surrounding areas are experiencing or will face water supply interruptions.

Members of the public are urged to use water sparingly and store sufficient supplies for essential household needs while the municipality continues to monitor operations.
