Municipality begins prepaid water meter installation across Randfontein
Free upgrades aim to improve management and curbing supply losses across residential areas.
Rand West City Local Municipality (RWCLM) has commenced installing prepaid water meters in residential areas across Randfontein.
The municipality issued a public notice on October 7 stating that the project aims to improve water meter management and monitoring, promote responsible consumption and assist in delivering an effective and sustainable service.
Municipal spokesperson Phillip Montshiwa confirmed the rollout, with authorised personnel and appointed installation teams accessing residential properties where necessary.
Residents are urged to cooperate with teams and grant access to meter installation points so work can proceed safely and efficiently.
Temporary supply interruptions may occur while individual meters are being fitted, though efforts will be made to minimise inconvenience.
The installation comes at no cost to affected residents, but RWCLM warned that meter tampering is a criminal offence subject to fines.
The initiative forms part of broader efforts to manage water resources and reduce losses, following previous municipal projects with similar objectives.
The rollout comes as supply remains a pressing concern in parts of Rand West City, where officials also urged residents on October 8 to conserve water due to critically low reservoir levels.
