Residents demand safer streets, better services

Residents have raised concerns about crime, unpaved roads, poor street lighting and failing infrastructure as Mayor William Matsheke outlines plans to improve services in Mohlakeng Ext 5.

Residents of Mohlakeng Ext 5 called for improved roads, street lighting, and infrastructure at a community meeting on October 15 at a local church in Mohlakeng. The municipality’s top brass attended the meeting, including Rand West City Local Municipality Executive Mayor William Matsheke.

Mlangeni said the meeting went well but stressed that tarred roads and streetlights remained among the community’s biggest concerns, particularly because of safety risks at night.

The mayor reaffirmed the municipality’s commitment to addressing the challenges, stating that his office had been engaging residents for the past two years.

Matsheke outlined plans to connect 70 households to the municipal sewer network, continue electrification, install 10 additional solar-powered streetlights and construct three substations to improve electricity capacity. The finalisation of title deeds was also among the commitments.

According to the mayor, service providers have been appointed, and implementation is expected to commence.
