Protest launched for rape victim
Mohlakeng community members protest following the rape of a teen who is now permanently paralysed.
Mohlakeng community members gathered outside the Randfontein Magistrate’s Court to protest against gender-based violence and child abuse.
February 2 marked a day of advocacy as community members along with the Mothers Care Organisation expressed their concern. The group walked to the court in support of a victim of sexual assault. The court hearing proceeded today and the group showed their utmost support for the victim by holding handmade placards and marching.

This comes after a teen was recently raped by a man in his early 20s.
According to Shirley Boom, founder of the Mothers Care Organisation, the teenage girl is permanently paralysed. Boom stated that the accused went into the victim’s house and raped her. The accused appeared in court today.
Boom added that the victim is currently receiving counselling at the Teddy Bear Foundation.

“Every woman that gathered here today, is a mother. Therefore, we feel the hurt and wish to support the victim today. We want to stand up against child abuse, sexual assault, and discrimination of those with disabilities,” Boom claimed, holding a placard in her hands.
The protesting members attended the court hearing as well.
