Municipality and community join hands to clean up Mohlakeng

More than 150 people volunteered to assist in cleaning the streets of Mohlakeng and its surroundings recently.

The Rand West City Local Municipality (RWCLM) hosted the Letsema Cleaning Campaign to clean large parts of Mohlakeng.

The Integrated Waste and Environmental Management Unit invited the community to join them for the Letsema Cleaning Campaign on April 11 from 08:00 to 13:00. This is according to municipal spokesperson Phillip Montshiwa who added that the brains behind the project was councillor Nozi Mapena.

Rand West City Local Municipality joined hands with community members to clean up the area.

Montshiwa mentioned that the campaign was hosted due to increased population and urban migration which has contributed to excess waste generation. The campaign is an effort used to raise environmental awareness.

He stated that more than 150 people volunteered to assist in cleaning the streets. The campaign started with speeches from the MMC, the Executive Director of Community Services, and the Ward Councillor. After that, the cleanup began which included litter picking, stormwater channel cleaning, grass cutting, and the Take a Tree Home Campaign. Areas that were cleaned include Mohlakeng, Hlazana and surrounding streets.

Montshiwa stated that the day was successful since they had the stakeholders and community members joining hands.

The campaign will conclude at the end of June.
