Abandoned house becoming a safety concern for neighbours

The criminal activity at an abandoned house on Henning Street is raising concern for residents.

Residents and neighbours are becoming more and more concerned about an abandoned property on Henning Street.

Resident Carel du Buisson explained the biggest concern with the house is the people that visit the house and cause havoc by making excessive noise, burning cables, plastic and other rubbish, not to mention smoking dagga and doing other drugs.

The house has been set on fire numerous times, Du Buisson added people have even set each other on fire on the property. He mentioned an instance where it happened around 02:00 when he woke up and found the house ablaze.

He added the house brings down the value of the houses in the community, making it difficult for people to sell their houses. A troubling concern is however the children that walk up and down the street alone, passing the house.

Du Buisson mentions that four bodies, that he is aware of, have been removed from the house. The Randfontein Herald approached the police regarding Du Buisson’s claims and is awaiting their feedback.

“It used to be a beautiful house before it was set on fire and broken down. Now it is just a shell of a house.”

He notified the current owner of the back door that was kicked in a few years back and mentioned the owner came to repair it but hasn’t been seen since. In the meantime, the entire house has been stripped.

“Something has to be done about the house.”

The Herald spoke to Rand West City Municipality’s spokesperson, Phillip Montshiwa, who commented, “The municipality is unable to take action due to the private ownership of the property. To deter crime, we strongly encourage communities to report any criminal activities to the police promptly. Moreover, we have duly notified the police about the incident, however, it is solely within the purview of law enforcement officials affiliated with the police to initiate any necessary measures.”

More details on this developing story will be given once feedback has been received from the police.
