Boy (9) mauled by dog, faces long recovery

A Zenzele boy is recovering from severe injuries and trauma after being attacked by a dog while walking home from a soccer game.

A nine-year-old boy was recently attacked by a dog in Zenzele and now faces a long road to recovery.

According to the child’s mother, when he finished playing soccer with his friends on July 16, he walked home.

She explained that a dog, the breed of which is still unknown, broke free from its chains. The boy and his friends tried to run away in panic, but he could not escape in time. Moments later, his mother came upon the devastating sight of her injured child.

She told the Randfontein Herald that her son sustained severe injuries to his legs and arms, some of which required intensive surgery. He also received a rabies vaccination and stitches, and remained in the hospital until August 1.

The child is currently using crutches to walk.

The boy is also undergoing psychiatric sessions due to the immense trauma he experienced. She noted her son will start his lessons shortly.

She has since opened a case at the Mohlakeng Police Station.

• The identity of the boy and his mother is being withheld as the matter is under police investigation – Ed.
