Car show to raise funds for JJ in his fight against cancer

The local car show community is rallying behind a 21-year-old who is battling a rare cancer. A fundraiser in September aims to help cover his treatment costs and bring him comfort during his fight.

A Car Show Fundraiser will be held on September 13 to support John Robert “JJ” Venter (21) and his family as he battles cancer.

Event co-ordinator Dawn Fernandez explained that the event aims to raise funds for John, who was recently diagnosed with Ewing Sarcoma, a rare cancer affecting bones and soft tissue.

As the family awaits the final staging results to determine how far the cancer has spread, they face the painful reality that John has no medical aid, meaning all treatment must be paid for in cash. According to Dawn, John has already lost motion from the waist down and is currently receiving radiation to target tumours in his spine.

“Other than financial struggles, his greatest challenge right now is managing the severe pain he is experiencing,” she said.

Since John is part of the car show community, friends and fellow enthusiasts rallied to organise the fundraiser. All proceeds will go directly to him to cover medical expenses.

“We want to make him as comfortable as possible, especially once he is sent home after radiation. He will continue chemotherapy, but at home, he will need a proper medical bed to ease his pain and provide relief,” Dawn added.

On the day, a variety of cars – from vintage and modified to everyday models – will be on display from 10:00 at the 10 Acres Driving Range on 112 5th Road, Tenacres.

Anyone interested in supporting the fundraiser can contact Dawn on 074 474 6174. For more information about John’s journey, his sister Merelda Venter can be reached on 063 470 0867.
