Community appeal launched to support caregiver
After receiving conflicting diagnoses for an autoimmune disorder, Miem van Vuuren hopes to consult a private doctor but requires financial support from the community.
Miem van Vuuren, a beloved caregiver from Vleikop who has dedicated her life to looking after others, is now fighting her own battle with an autoimmune disorder.
She explained that on July 9, she underwent tests, and a week later was told she had an autoimmune condition. At first, she was diagnosed with Lupus and treated with two drips and an injection, which gave her some relief. Soon afterwards, however, doctors informed her that she, in fact, has Rheumatoid arthritis and placed her on medication for pain and gout. Sadly, she says the medication has brought little to no relief, and she continues to suffer.
Both Lupus and Rheumatoid arthritis are autoimmune diseases in which the immune system attacks healthy tissue, causing inflammation. In the case of Lupus, the immune system can also attack the organs.
Since her initial diagnosis, Miem has experienced frequent flare-ups and has been hospitalised multiple times for treatment. On September 15, she was admitted again, and further blood tests were taken to determine whether she has Lupus or Rheumatoid arthritis.
Her health struggles come on the back of financial hardship, after she paid for her mother’s cancer treatment. Thankfully, her mother survived.
“I am in pain every day. I have swelling in my whole body, including my face, legs and hands. I’m constantly dropping things, I have a red rash on my face and neck, and I bruise without injury,” Miem said.
Her greatest fear now is losing her job, as she is often unable to work due to illness. She hopes to consult a private doctor for a clear diagnosis, but cannot afford the costs without assistance.
