Retired teachers unite through song, dance and tradition

A day of culture and tradition was recently showcased as the West Rand Retired Teachers Association celebrated Heritage Day.

Members of the West Rand Retired Teachers Association (Werreta) recently marked their version of Heritage Day at the Mohlakeng Our Lady of Africa Catholic Church, donning an array of colourful and traditional attire representing diverse cultures from Setswana to IsiXhosa, Sotho to Ndebele.

The celebration featured elements of song, dance, praise, singing and poetry. The various cultures united in harmony to honour history and tradition.

“It is such an honour for us as Werreta to be part of the nation and to remember our roots by passing them on to our children and generations beyond. As Africans, this is where we come from,” said Phindile Xakaza, who was MC on the day.

Werreta chairperson Maria Babupi stated that there is rapid growth in membership of former teachers who served in this noble profession, which forms the foundation of all others.

“Since our inception in 2011, our membership has grown, and we currently have about 90 members. However, we have lost some along the way, and we face challenges with the venue we pay for, but this does not weaken our unity as a family. We also celebrate other events like Youth Day and conduct awareness campaigns,” she added.
