Westcol Westonaria campus takes a stand against GBV
Westcol TVET College's Westonaria campus recently held an awareness event to stand against gender-based violence and femicide while promoting safety and prevention.
Various stakeholders recently participated in a gender-based violence and femicide (GBVF) awareness event held by Westcol TVET College’s Westonaria campus to promote emotional well-being and education.
Student support services officer Letlhogonolo Mokataka explained that this awareness event addressed the increasing concerns around student safety, emotional well-being, as well as the broader issue of violence affecting communities.
“We wanted to educate students and staff about the realities, causes and impact of GBVF on both individuals and families. We aimed to promote safety and prevention,” Mokataka said.

She further explained that this event ultimately empowered students with the knowledge of identifying abusive behaviours early while preventing victimisation by helping them know their rights and responsibilities.
Furthermore, the event provided support and resources to connect students with the relevant structures such a the police, social workers, counsellors, etc.
“We encourage survivors and witnesses to report cases without fear and to highlight available channels in the community.
“Spreading awareness about GBVF is important because it helps communities understand the seriousness of gender-based violence, recognise early warning signs, and prevent abuse before it happens. It empowers survivors to speak out, reduces stigma, and guides people to available support services. Awareness can strengthen community responsibility all the while promoting a safer environment,” Mokataka explained.
Stakeholders of the event included the Westonaria police’s GBV team, the keynote speaker from the Department of Justice, Mashudu Neliheni, WRAP, the South African National Blood Service, Areageng Social Centre, and crime prevention wardens.
