Help SPCA reward staff who rescue animals

After a long year of rescuing and caring for animals in dire situations, the RandWest SPCA committee hopes to thank staff for going the extra mile.

After a long year of rescuing animals in need, the RandWest SPCA is appealing to the community for donations towards staff bonuses.

Committee member Brenda Eloff said they currently have 11 employees, all of whom open their hearts and hands to assist animals in distress. At the end of the year, they hope to show each person a small sign of appreciation by handing over year-end bonuses; however, they need the community’s help to do so.

She explained that although they try to host as many fundraisers as possible, every time they think they can save some money, something unexpected happens that makes it impossible. They aim to give each staff member at least R1 500 as a gesture of appreciation for the work they do in the community.

For their year-end, they are planning a braai, which committee members intend to fund out of their own pockets.

“The SPCA’s work stretches wide, from confiscations to rescues, to the care of the animals and maintenance of the grounds and facilities. Their work is not just physically, but emotionally, extremely draining,” she said.

She noted that although there were many lows throughout the year, every rescued animal is a highlight. One moment that stood out was the arrest of Mika’s owner. Mika was rescued a few years ago in a terrible state, but recovered from near death to live her best life. Brenda said Mika’s owner disappeared when they opened a police case against him, but thanks to their personnel, who always go above and beyond, he was found and arrested.

“It is of the utmost importance to us to show our personnel we see what they are going through. This time of year is our busiest, and we want to ease their burden with a simple, but sincere, thank you,” she said.

She concluded, “On behalf of the committee, I want to thank the public for their support. Without you, we couldn’t carry out this work. You make every rescue, recovery and new beginning possible.”
