Act now: Help make every home safe for children
Girls and Boys Town South Africa urges South Africans to take action this 16 Days of Activism, helping children and families heal and thrive.
Girls and Boys Town South Africa (GBTSA) invites residents to join them not just in awareness, but in action – checking in on a child, supporting a struggling parent and challenging harmful behaviours.
According to GBTSA CEO Karen Farred, every year, South Africa pauses to confront a painful truth: Too many homes have become places of harm rather than healing.
“This December, as the nation observes the 16 Days of Activism, GBTSA is shining a light on a powerful truth: Every child deserves a home rooted in safety, dignity, and love, and every family has the potential to heal and grow. When children feel protected, they grow differently, and when families are strengthened, communities transform. Together, we can create a South Africa where every child can confidently say, ‘home is my safe place’,” she said.
Farred added that GBTSA supports children who have experienced neglect, trauma, conflict and instability.
“With the right support, young people can bloom again, rediscover trust, regulate emotions, find their voice, and build meaningful relationships.”
Strengthening families, one conversation at a time
She said the organisation also helps families heal, understanding that strong families create strong communities.
“Support includes positive communication training, counselling for caregivers, conflict resolution guidance, and surrounding children with caring adults. Sometimes, healing begins with a single honest conversation – an ‘I’m trying’ from a parent, or ‘I am ready to trust again’ from a child. GBTSA walks with families through these small but transformative moments.”
Advocacy rooted in humanity
This year, GBTSA’s 16 Days of Activism message is simple but profound: Violence is not destiny. Healing is possible.
“Our advocacy is not about statistics but real stories: a teenager reclaiming their voice, a family learning to reconnect, a caregiver discovering new ways to nurture and communities rallying around children.”
