SPCA issues holiday safety tips

With the festive season just around the corner, the RandWest SPCA advises residents on how to keep their pets safe and happy.

The RandWest SPCA has shared important information for pet owners to keep in mind as the festive season approaches.

SPCA manager René van Straten reminded all pet owners going away on holiday to ensure their animals are properly cared for.

“Book them into a boarding facility or, if someone is looking after them, make sure that person is trustworthy,” she advised.

She further warned that animals found abandoned or left without proper care may be removed, and criminal charges could be brought against the owners. René also cautioned against fireworks, noting that they affect not only pets but larger animals such as cattle and horses, as well as wild animals, including birds and bees. People can also be affected, particularly those suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder.

She advised residents to celebrate the New Year with lights or sparklers instead of fireworks.

“Before buying fireworks, consider buying a bag of dog or cat food to donate to animals in need. Instead of contributing to something that harms animals, contribute to something that helps them,” said René.

She also thanked the community for its ongoing support.

“Without the community standing behind us, we could not do what we do every day. Thanks to them, we can keep our doors open and continue our work. We hope everyone stays safe this festive season and ensures their animals are safe,” René concluded.
