VW Golf 7 GTI shines in Christmas lights competition

From sparkling cars to festive rides, Randfontein’s Kersliggie competition brought holiday cheer and creativity to the streets, leaving the whole town mesmerised

In early December, the town came alive for its annual Kersliggies (Christmas lights) festivities, a community-centred celebration that blended Christmas spirit with a unique automotive twist.

As part of the seasonal festivities, the Randfontein Publicity Association (RPA) once again organised their Kersliggiekompetisie (Christmas lights competition) on December 5 last year. The event aimed to showcase the town’s brightest and most creatively decorated light displays, not only on houses but also on motor vehicles.

Participants travelled from far and wide to display their inventive vehicles either for judging or to take part in a light ride (liggierit) that would traverse various neighbourhoods. The car category was a particular favourite among local motoring enthusiasts. Owners of cars of all makes and models decorated their vehicles with Christmas lights and holiday ornaments, creating a moving spectacle that merged automotive culture with Christmas cheer.

The winner of the competition was Dominic Pereira, who secured victory with his girlfriend’s VW Golf 7 GTI.

“I spent a lot of time and effort getting the car ready, and I’m very happy with the outcome,” said Dominic.

Runner-up was Len Roodt with his Audi S3, while third place was awarded to Dewald van Niekerk with his Nissan 1400. Dewald mentioned he enjoyed the competition and is now looking forward to entering again this year by enhancing his car with a few tricks, hoping to claim the top spot.

The event, including the lights competition and the associated rides, has become a highlight of the year in Randfontein. Its purpose is not only to entertain but also to foster neighbourliness, strengthen town spirit, and allow residents to showcase their holiday creativity in a fun and inclusive manner.

Although it is not a traditional car show, the Kersliggierit and car category added a memorable automotive dimension to the festivities, making it a standout in the region’s festive calendar.
