An urgent information session on foot and mouth disease held in neighbouring Krugersdorp highlighted growing concerns among West Rand farmers, with 54 reported cases and fears of long-term financial impact.

An urgent information session on foot and mouth disease (FMD) was held in Krugersdorp on February 19 to address growing concerns about the outbreak.

The session was hosted by the Mogale City Local Municipality in partnership with the Gauteng Department of Agriculture and Rural Development to raise awareness and provide guidance on prevention and control measures.

According to organisers, farmers received practical advice from experts on how to monitor livestock and limit the spread of the disease.

Ryan Marsden of AgriGauteng said there were 54 reported cases in the West Rand District Municipality at the time of the session. He warned that quarantine regulations and underreporting could have serious financial implications for farmers.
