Giving life: Women lead blood donation efforts

This International Women’s Month, SANBS celebrates the powerful role women play in giving hope, healing and life.

As South Africa marks International Women’s Month in March, the South African National Blood Service (SANBS) celebrates the women whose dedication, compassion and acts of service strengthen communities across the country.

According to SANBS spokesperson Thandi Mosupye, women across South Africa are encouraged to ‘Give to Gain’ by helping strengthen communities and saving lives through blood donation.

She said this year’s theme highlights the power of generosity and collaboration, encouraging individuals and communities to give their time, knowledge, support and resources to create greater opportunities for women.

“Women give in many ways. They lead in workplaces, guide teams with empathy, organise support networks and create spaces where hope can grow. For many, that spirit of giving also includes the gift of life through blood donation,” Thandi said.

Thandi added that across South Africa, thousands of women roll up their sleeves at SANBS donor centres and mobile blood drives, knowing that a single blood donation can save up to three lives.

“Their contributions often extend beyond formal roles as they volunteer their time, nurture families and uplift communities. When women give their time, compassion and leadership in service of others, the impact extends far beyond a single moment. For us, that impact is often quite literally lifesaving. Every blood donation helps hospitals treat trauma patients, mothers during childbirth and children fighting illness.”

From boardrooms to classrooms and community initiatives, Thandi added that women continue to shape how South Africa grows and cares for its people.

“Their leadership, generosity and commitment remind us that saving lives is not only the work of hospitals, but of communities working together. When women give, whether through leadership, service or a simple blood donation, South Africa gains something priceless: hope, healing and life,” Thandi concluded.
