SA farmers prove key to economy and food security – TLU SA

South African farmers have driven the country’s economy forward, with the agriculture sector growing 17.4% in 2025 despite numerous challenges, the Transvaal Agricultural Union of South Africa (TLU SA) stated.

The Transvaal Agricultural Union of South Africa (TLU SA) says the latest economic figures show that South African farmers are vital for the country’s economy, food security and development, something rural communities experience every day.

Statistics South Africa reports that the agriculture, forestry and fishing sector grew by 17.4% in 2025 compared with 2024, the highest growth among all primary sectors.

“This growth contributed significantly to South Africa’s overall GDP increase of 1.1% for the year, while the economy expanded by 0.4% in the fourth quarter of 2025,” said Bennie van Zyl, general manager of TLU SA.

He added that for TLU SA, these numbers are more than just statistics; they reflect the critical role agriculture plays in South Africa and the continued dedication of farmers who produce under increasingly challenging conditions.

The data shows that agriculture is one of the few sectors that consistently creates value for the country. This growth confirms that agriculture is not merely a supporting sector of the economy.

“It truly carries the economy. Behind this 17.4% growth are thousands of farmers making decisions every day, managing risks, and continuing to plant and produce despite uncertainty,” Van Zyl explained.

He emphasised that these achievements occur under difficult conditions:

“Farmers face rising input costs, unreliable infrastructure, logistical challenges, water and energy problems, policy uncertainty, and the ongoing threat of farm attacks and rural crime. Despite these challenges, they continue to produce food and contribute to economic growth.”

TLU SA highlights that the true value of agriculture goes far beyond the farm gate. While some sectors have contracted, agriculture has continued to deliver growth, benefiting an entire network including input suppliers, transport industries, food processing, export logistics, and rural economies.

“When agriculture grows, an entire network grows with it. The impact of agriculture extends far beyond the farm itself.”

This growth also serves as a reminder that agriculture is a strategic sector for South Africa’s future. With unemployment high and economic growth under pressure, agriculture offers real opportunities for development, job creation, and stability.

“Food security and economic stability begin with the people who work the land. If South Africa is serious about growth and development, the agricultural sector must not only be recognised, it must be protected and supported.”

TLU SA stressed that policy certainty, rural safety, functional infrastructure, and practical support for producers are essential to unlock the sector’s full potential.

They also take this opportunity to recognise every farmer in South Africa – from small family farms to large commercial producers – who continue day after day to produce food and create economic value.

“Behind every statistic is a farmer, a family, and a community,” Van Zyl said. “These are people who often work under difficult and uncertain circumstances, yet they persevere. South Africa’s economy and food security rest largely on their shoulders. Without farmers, there is no food, stability, or growth. These figures prove it beyond doubt.”
