Community organises run to ease teacher’s medical burden

A community-led fun run is set to bring people together in support of a Helikonpark teacher’s ongoing recovery after multiple brain surgeries.

A community-driven fundraising event titled ‘One Step at a Time: Run for Recovery Charity Fun Run’ has been launched to support ongoing medical care and rehabilitation costs for Niel Horn, who is recovering after undergoing multiple brain surgeries for a brain tumour.

The initiative comes in response to the significant financial burden of long-term treatment, including physiotherapy, speech therapy, occupational therapy and future medical procedures still required for his recovery.

Organised by his wife Anesta in partnership with RandMark, the event aims to bring the community together through a fun run that promotes unity, fitness and compassion, while raising essential funds for medical expenses.

The main goal of the fundraiser is to generate financial support for ongoing treatment and rehabilitation needs. All proceeds from the event will go directly towards medical bills and therapy costs, helping to ensure continuous care and progress in his recovery.

Organisers are expecting a strong turnout, with hopes of attracting between 500 and 1 000 participants. The event has already received support from local running clubs, schools, churches and community groups, reflecting broad community involvement.

The event will take place on 23 May at Greenhills Stadium. Runners can choose between a 5km and 8km route. The 8km race starts at 07:00, followed by the 5km at 07:15. Tickets will be available on the day from 05:00 to 06:45, or participants can register in advance by scanning the QR code on the pamphlet below. Volunteers are also invited to assist as road marshals to help ensure the event runs smoothly and safely.
Several local businesses have also come forward as sponsors in support of the initiative.

Beyond participation in the run, community members can also support the cause through a BackaBuddy campaign, as well as a raffle initiative currently running alongside the event.

Organisers hope the fundraiser will not only provide financial relief but also strengthen community bonds, highlighting the importance of coming together to support those in need.

The Charity Fun Run is set to be more than just a sporting event, it is a collective effort of hope, solidarity, and determination, reflecting the community’s support for Niel Horn during his recovery journey.
