Warm hearts and warmer blankets for Mohlakeng elderly

#MandelaDay: Fleece blankets, heartfelt conversations and joyful singing turned an ordinary visit into a memorable day for Mohlakeng's elderly residents.

In celebration of International Nelson Mandela Day, the West Rand Retired Teachers Association brought warmth and joy to residents of the Mohlakeng Old Age Home through a heartfelt blanket donation drive on July 17.

The group donated fleece blankets to help keep residents warm during the winter season. They also spent time with the elderly, sharing conversations, laughter and companionship.

The initiative formed part of former President Nelson Mandela’s call to action, encouraging individuals and organisations to dedicate their time to uplifting others.

Chairperson of the association, Kedike Babupi, said the day held special meaning for the retired educators.

“As retired teachers, we have always been passionate about caring for our communities. Madiba Day allows us to continue serving, this time by showing love and appreciation to our elders who have contributed so much to society. Many of the residents of this specific old age home are retired teachers and nurses,” said Kedike.

Residents welcomed the gesture with gratitude, with many expressing appreciation not only for the blankets but also for the companionship and kindness shown by the visitors.

The association said initiatives like this serve as a reminder that even small acts of kindness can have a lasting impact, especially during the winter months when many vulnerable residents rely on community support.

The visit ended on a joyful note, with smiles, singing and dancing as residents and volunteers embraced the true spirit of giving, compassion and togetherness.
