RCA encourages reading

Randfontein Christian Academy celebrated World Book Day with a character dress-up and a lot of reading.

Randfontein Christian Academy (RCA) recently celebrated World Book Day to encourage reading among the youth.

Last month, RCA allowed learners and staff to dress up as their favourite book characters. They then had the opportunity to enjoy a day of reading.

According to the school’s librarian and Grade Three supervisor, Anna van Rensburg, the learners had to give a small speech about their favourite book characters along with reading a small passage from the book.

Isago Dishego (8) enjoys reading.

“The learners had a day full of reading and fun. They truly enjoyed it,” Anna said.

She claimed that she wanted to celebrate World Book Day since reading is important for development.

“Children do not read as often as they should. Therefore, we thought that World Book Day would be the perfect opportunity to introduce learners to the world of reading. We are even thinking of implementing a period for reading,” Anna stated.
