Moddies bring hope with meals

Aiming to improve health and academic growth among learners, Laerskool Modderfontein Primary School started a feeding scheme that feeds 22 learners.

Laerskool Modderfontein Primary School’s feeding scheme ensures learners have a nutritious meal to help them keep focus and stay healthy.

Feeding scheme organiser and Senior Phase Departmental Head Michelle van der Merwe explained that the scheme is designed to give 22 needy learners at least one nourishing meal during school days.

Besides helping learners grow, Michelle further noted that this scheme aims to reduce hunger, improve attendance among children and support better academic performance. She added that the programme can even reach struggling family members by offering relief.

“It is financed through the school’s own budget, as well as generous donations from teachers and supporting companies,” Michelle said.

Besides the feeding scheme, the school also has a food drive where each grade donates non-perishable items such as rice and canned food. The donations are then given as parcels to families on the feeding scheme for the June and December holidays.

“Last year, we decided to spoil our learners with a Christmas gift. Teachers Olwethu Matobole, Sinazo Rautini and Reshell Enkeld decided on this special initiative,” Michelle explained.

During the first break, learners receive a warm serving of porridge, and during the second break, they are given homemade meals such as pasta, spaghetti, or freshly prepared sandwiches, with juice, depending on the day’s menu.

Michelle thanked all sponsors and those supporting the scheme.
