Parents seek answers over children’s ongoing placement challenges

Parents in Randfontein report their children remain without school placements despite applying on time, leaving many anxious and frustrated.

Parents in Randfontein are struggling to secure school placements for their children, despite submitting applications on time and the academic year already being underway.

On January 26, a group of parents visited the Gauteng Department of Education’s District Offices seeking answers, but had received no feedback at the time of reporting.

Zamokuhle Mtungwa, whose child is meant to be in Grade 8, said: “I feel frustrated. We come here over and over again and still don’t get answers. I am exhausted.” She added that local schools have available space, but her child remains unplaced.

Lettie Vis, mother of a Grade 1 learner, said her child was placed at a school in Toekomsrus, far from home, despite timely application. Lerato Moloto, who relocated from Rustenburg, said her Grade 10 daughter remains on a waiting list and is currently not attending school.

Some parents, like Dumelang Bagolo, were more fortunate, receiving confirmation of placement for their children.

The Gauteng Department of Education acknowledged that a small number of Grade 1 and Grade 8 learners across the province are still awaiting placement due to capacity pressures, particularly in high-demand areas. The department assured parents that all qualifying learners will be placed.

Late applications are open until January 31, 2026, with supporting documents either uploaded online or submitted directly to schools. Parents can contact the GDE at 0800 000 789 (toll-free), 060 891 0361 (WhatsApp), or GDEInfo@gauteng.gov.za for assistance.
