Hartzstraat’s fantastic four retire with more than 130 years of combined service

After more than 130 years of combined service, four Hartzstraat Primary teachers step into retirement, leaving behind a lasting legacy.

A wave of gratitude and celebration filled the air as four long-serving teachers from Hartzstraat Primary School were honoured at a special retirement function held at Westgold Primary School.

Colleagues, friends and members of the school community gathered to pay tribute to Keith Mecuur, Gershwyn Julius, Norah Phillips and Deon George – four dedicated teachers whose combined years of service exceed a century.

Julius concluded his teaching career after 24 years, leaving a lasting mark through his dedication to learner development and his approachable nature, which earned him respect from both students and colleagues.

Phillips, who devoted 36 years to education, was recognised for her nurturing spirit and tireless efforts in guiding learners through their formative years. Her colleagues praised her patience, kindness, and the positive influence she had on countless young lives.

George retired after 38 years, earning recognition for his consistency, leadership, and passion for teaching. His years of service have built a strong foundation within the school, and his presence will be deeply missed.

Mecuur, who retired after an incredible 40 years of teaching, was celebrated for his unwavering commitment to shaping young minds and his lasting impact in the classroom. Known for his discipline and passion for education, he leaves behind a legacy that will be remembered by generations of learners.

The retirement celebration featured heartfelt speeches, laughter and moments of reflection as fellow teachers shared stories and expressed their appreciation for the retirees’ dedication and sacrifice.

The event not only marked the end of remarkable careers but also highlighted the profound impact teachers have in shaping communities. As the four step into retirement, they do so with the gratitude and admiration of all those whose lives they have touched.

Their legacy will continue to live on in the classrooms they once led and in the many learners who carry forward the lessons they imparted.
