Debating glory for Randfontein High
Randfontein High School's senior debating team delivered a standout performance to win the Atheneum Sunday League, with top individual honours and strong junior rankings capping off an impressive campaign.
The senior debating team from Randfontein High School has emerged victorious in the prestigious Atheneum Debating Sunday League on June 7, delivering an outstanding performance throughout the competition.

The team secured their place at the top after a series of impressive wins, defeating St Teresa’s School in the quarterfinal, St John’s College in the semifinal, and Crawford International Pretoria in a gripping final.
In the championship round, the Randfontein High team confidently proposed the motion, ‘This House Opposes the Increasing Prevalence of Nihilism Among Young People’, showcasing their critical thinking, persuasive skills and depth of understanding.
The winning team consisted of Musa Mange (Grade 11), Boikanyo Malinga (Grade 10), Mvelo Makhathini (Grade 10), and Edzai Mpukuzela (Grade 10), all of whom played a key role in the team’s success.
Individual accolades further highlighted the team’s excellence. Edzai was named the Best Senior Speaker of the tournament, a remarkable achievement that underscores his debating prowess. Mvelo also performed strongly, finishing 12th in the senior speaker rankings.
Randfontein High’s success extended to the junior division, where Luthando Makhasi (Grade Nine) secured an impressive fifth-place ranking, while Oprah Sitole (Grade Nine) placed 18th.
The team’s achievements reflect not only their hard work and dedication, but also the growing strength of debating at the school. Their victory in the Sunday League stands as a proud moment for Randfontein High and sets a high standard for future competitions.
