Identifying talent

The project is for children between the ages of 6 and 16 years.

The Toekomsrus Freestylers project is discovering raw talent and identifying freestyle youngsters who are between the ages of 6 and 16 years.

This platform will be used to help the youth to showcase their skills, and develop further, to help them become professional freestylers of the future.

Daniel du Plessis learns a new trick at his soccer freestyle practice.

Enrique Bhana, co-founder of the project, said one of the most important objectives that it aims to achieve is to get the youth off the streets and away from all the social ills they fall victim to.

“We want to have them participate in the mainstream part of this kind of sport eventually. At the end of the day, once they perfect their skills, there are many things that they will be able to achieve; for instance, earning a decent living without resorting to crime,” Enrique said..

He said in the process, the academy will also instill good morals in the children.

“We wanted to have a comprehensive project in which our youth are not only pursuing their talents, but we thought it would also be important to educate them about the things that they may fall victim to.

“We thought it would be better if they knew all about the things that may impact their lives negatively. We hope that they will also carry the message to their peers in the community.”

Enrique said there are many young people in the community who have never been given an opportunity to exhibit their talents, and will never know what they can do unless they have the platform to do so.

“The aim is to eventually expand this all over the West Rand. It does not matter what the kids want to freestyle – tennis or soccer, or anything else – this is an avenue to give them the opportunity to do what they do best, and eventually get paid for doing something they love,” Enrique added.
