SKI Spartans Karate wins big
SKI West Rand Spartans Club recently won bronze medals at the Karate Common Wealth Cup and Elite Championships.
Athletes from the SKI West Rand Spartans Club made history when they won bronze medals at the Karate Commonwealth Cup and Elite Championships on Saturday, 1 December.
The championships were held at the Olive Convention Centre in the capital of KwaZulu-Natal, Durban.
Samantha Mare won her second international bronze medal in the individual female junior category of the fighting section. Coach Luciano Enzo Pillay said that he was happy with Samantha’s result overall.
“She did her best on the day – it’s every coach’s dream to see his or her athlete win medals,” he said.
Participating in the senior tournament, Enzo also got a bronze medal in the team Kata section. The team was made up of Justin du Plooy, Gerduan Janse van Rensburg and Enzo.

According to Sensei Kruben Pillay, chief instructor of SKI Spartans, Samantha and Enzo now have their sights set on the World Championship next year in Chile.
Bokamuso Mokhukhwane finished just outside the medals in fourth position, while Ethan Venter got the third bronze medal for the club and the country as a whole in the children’s section of the tournament.
“The Spartans Club finished the year on a high with these few athletes setting the stage for things to come in the new year,” Kruben said.
Kruben also said that teamwork makes the dream work. Kruben is, however, proud of the accomplishments of all the competitors who hail from the SKI clubs of Gauteng.
“It was announced that Hanshi Sonny Pillay, the President of Karate South Africa, was democratically elected as the President of the Commonwealth Karate Association. This is a huge feather in the cap for the karatekas of South Africa. The President announced in his opening address at the closing ceremony that South Africa will again feature a huge team at 10th World Commonwealth Karate Championship in Birmingham, England,” he added.
