West Rand Marathon draws thousands in celebration of fitness, community

From first-timers to seasoned athletes, the West Rand Marathon brought the district together in motion.

The streets of Randfontein came alive on Sunday, March 29, as runners of all ages and fitness levels gathered for the West Rand Marathon.

The event drew a mix of experienced athletes, social runners and community members, all sharing a passion for fitness and endurance. From early morning, participants lined up at the start, ready to challenge themselves in the 5km, 10km and 21km race categories.

The 21km half-marathon tested stamina, with seasoned runners pushing through a demanding route. The 10km race offered a moderate challenge, while the 5km fun run catered to families, school groups, and first-time participants in a more relaxed setting.

Supporters lined the routes, cheering runners on and creating an energetic atmosphere. Water points and marshals were placed along the course to help ensure participants’ safety.

Race director Siyaya Khoza praised the strong turnout and community spirit, noting that the event continues to grow as more residents embrace active lifestyles.

Khoza explained that over 3 000 enthusiastic participants took part in this inspiring event, showcasing the vibrant spirit of our community and our commitment to promoting healthy lifestyles through sport.

However, a few logistical challenges were experienced, including a shortage of race medals and difficulties with marshals managing traffic at certain points.

“Additional medals had been left at the race office in Krugersdorp, and those who did not receive theirs would have them delivered or could collect them later.”

Some medals were distributed on Monday at Planet Fitness in Tambotie Mall.

Addressing concerns about marshals, Khoza said local clubs and high school learners were involved as volunteers. He added that while there were some shortcomings, the initiative aims to equip young people with valuable skills and experience.

Despite these issues, the West Rand Marathon remained a celebration of perseverance, unity, and strong community spirit.
