Runners from Randfontein and Krugersdorp played a key role in the inaugural Champions League Cross Country Series, a new franchise-based cross country competition in South Africa that has now concluded with strong performances from across the region.

The series featured six franchises competing over multiple events, introducing an exciting new structure to junior and youth cross country in the country. Krugersdorp’s franchise, the Eagles, emerged as the overall champions, showcasing consistency and depth across all age groups.

The winning team was led by Coach Franco Oosthuizen, who is also a coach at Hoërskool Noordheuwel. Under his leadership, the Eagles fielded a strong squad of 52 athletes, with several runners representing schools in Randfontein, Krugersdorp and surrounding areas.

According to Oosthuizen, the series has been widely praised for its innovative franchise format, which emphasises teamwork, development pathways and long-term athlete growth rather than individual results alone. It has already been described as an important pipeline for junior athletics in South Africa.

“The purpose of the tournament was not only to develop athletes, but also to revive cross country at school level. Many of our athletes come from Krugersdorp as well as Randfontein, with learners from Hoërskool Riebeeckrand representing the West Rand,” he said.

The Eagles secured the inaugural title with 1 455 points, edging out the Pythons (1 481 points) and the Rhinos (1 763 points) during the season finale held on May 31, 2026, at Curro Serengeti in Kempton Park.

Following the win, Oosthuizen reflected that it was a blessing to work with the runners throughout the competition. He said the athletes came from different backgrounds across the region and were willing to support each other while also enjoying the experience.
