Goals, giving and goodwill at charity soccer tournament

Veteran soccer players combined their passion for the game with a mission to make a difference in their community.

Four local teams recently locked horns in the Masters Charity Soccer League Tournament, held at the AB Phokompe High School grounds.

The teams consist of recreational players aged 35 and older who take to the field for the love of the game, camaraderie and post-match socialising.

“While we play purely for the love of the game, we felt it was important to do something for the community. As MaHippy FC and the Local Organising Committee (LOC) of the Greater Randfontein Easter Soccer Tournament (GREST), we wanted to give back where there is a need,” said Thabo Makhanya, treasurer of GREST and a player for MaHippy FC.

“Through the Top Four Masters Charity Tournament, players donated pairs of shoes and sanitary pads, which were handed over to Mohlakano Primary School,” added GREST chairperson Abe Montoedi.

During the tournament, well-known DJ Gipla Thole traded his headphones and decks for a soccer ball as he turned out for Monate Mpolaye in the name of charity. However, his appearance was not enough to prevent MaHippy FC from claiming a 2–1 victory in the final. Earlier in the tournament, MaHippy FC also defeated Groovers FC 6–0.
