Derby ends in controversy, but Teine keeps Castle Cup

Teine strengthened their title charge with a clean sweep over Roodepoort, despite the first team's match ending prematurely following abuse directed at the referee.

It was a commanding day on the field in Florida for Randfontein Rugby Club as they recorded emphatic away victories across all divisions against West Rand rivals Roodepoort Rugby Club on Saturday, July 11.

The day’s fixtures were marked by dominant performances, although two matches ended prematurely.

The junior teams got the day off to a flying start. Teine’s U19 side produced a sensational attacking display to claim a runaway 71–17 victory, while the U21 team followed up with a convincing 38–22 win in a competitive encounter.

In the third-team fixture, Randfontein had built a commanding 73–0 lead when the match was halted with 25 minutes remaining. The game could not continue after Roodepoort were left without enough players on the bench, forcing an early conclusion.

Randfontein’s second team maintained the winning momentum with a disciplined 29–0 victory, keeping their opponents scoreless throughout the match.

First team match cut short

The first team were also firmly in control, leading 36–5, before the match was cut short in the 30th minute. The fixture ended prematurely following abuse directed at the referee by Roodepoort spectators and players, as confirmed by the Golden Lions Rugby Union (GLRU).

League representative Pieter Visser condemned the conduct and confirmed that the result would stand.

“After receiving the match report, the score for Randfontein will stand without any alterations or replays. The abuse of match officials will not be tolerated, and the union takes a strong stance against such conduct. Therefore, all rugby activities for Roodepoort are suspended until the league meets on July 20 to decide how to move forward,” said Visser.

Teine assistant coach Hennie van Eck said the team was pleased to secure the five log points on offer.

“It helps us stay on track to finish top of the log. A Randfontein vs Roodepoort derby is always tough, as the day usually has a lot of hype attached to it.”

Head coach Willem van Loggerenberg echoed those sentiments, adding that he was pleased the floating Castle Cup, contested annually between the two clubs, would remain in Randfontein for another year.

Eyes on the final league fixture

Attention now turns to Randfontein’s final league match against Alberton Rugby Club on July 25. A victory for Teine will secure a top-of-the-log finish and home-ground advantage for the upcoming playoff matches.

With momentum firmly on their side, Randfontein Rugby Club will be confident heading into the decisive encounter as they look to cap off a dominant league campaign.
