Born and raised in Mohlakeng, Ofentse Mogalobe is steadily making his mark behind the lens as a passionate sports photographer known as ‘Official Covy’.

With a deep love for sport and a keen eye for detail, he is dedicated to capturing the intensity, emotion and unforgettable moments that define every game.

For Ofentse, sports photography is about far more than simply taking pictures – it is a way of telling stories.

“I was inspired by my love of sports. Being on the field is therapeutic for me,” he explained.

“There is something special about capturing live action, whether it be tackles, goals, celebrations or emotions. It’s also about leaving a legacy because these photos become part of history for future generations.”

Like many photographers working in fast-paced sporting environments, Ofentse says the profession comes with its challenges. One of the biggest is anticipating the action before it happens.

“Sometimes you miss important moments like celebrations or key emotions because you were not fast enough to anticipate them, or your camera struggles to focus in time,” he said.

Despite these challenges, he has already built an impressive portfolio. Among the events he has enjoyed photographing the most are the Gauteng Development League and the Engen Cup.

“Those are among the most competitive junior tournaments in Gauteng. Many of the players we photograph there go on to become professionals and play in the PSL, which makes it even more special.”

Ofentse credits much of his development to the support and mentorship he received early in his career. He speaks highly of fellow photographer Daniel Hlongwane, who played an important role in helping him grow.

“He inspired me a lot and gave me valuable tips on how to capture proper action shots. At one point, when I lost my gear, he even lent me his equipment and encouraged me not to give up,” he shared.

He also draws inspiration from renowned photographers Phakamisa Lensman and Sydney Mahlangu, whose work continues to influence his style and ambitions.

Looking ahead, Ofentse has his sights set on the international stage. His long-term dream is to work as part of the photography teams covering top sporting competitions.

“I want to be part of the photography teams for major leagues like the NBA and the English Premier League,” he said. “In the short term, I am working towards becoming an accredited photographer in the Betway Premiership.”

For young people interested in photography, Ofentse has a simple message: start where you are.

“Do not die with an idea. Get any camera you can, learn from platforms like YouTube, ask questions, do your research and keep shooting. The more you practise, the better you will become.”

Through dedication, resilience and a passion for storytelling, Ofentse is proving that the right focus can turn a single moment into a lasting legacy.
