Bekkersdal gamers battle for spots in municipal FC26 tournament

Local libraries are transforming into vibrant digital hubs as youth step up to showcase their strategic gaming talents.

Bekkersdal Library hosted an Xbox Gaming Tournament on October 21, as players from the area competed to represent their local library branch at the main municipal tournament.

The gaming tournament is a Rand West City Local Municipality initiative that looks to discover gaming talent in the region.

The tournament formed part of the selection process to identify two outstanding players who will represent Bekkersdal Library at the main municipal tournament scheduled to take place in Randfontein on Friday, October 30.

Path to regional competition

From the municipal tournament, four of the best gamers will be selected to represent Rand West City Local Municipality and Rand West City Libraries at an upcoming regional gaming tournament in Pretoria.

Beyond the excitement of the knockout matches, the initiative highlighted the important role libraries play in promoting digital literacy, youth development, strategic thinking and positive social interaction among young people.

Through innovative programmes such as gaming tournaments, Rand West City Libraries continue to create opportunities for young people to explore their interests, discover their talents and build confidence in a technology-driven environment.

The initiative also demonstrates how libraries are evolving beyond traditional reading spaces into vibrant community hubs where young people can connect, learn and develop new skills through technology.

As the selected gamers prepare for the municipal tournament, the competition offers them an opportunity to showcase their abilities, represent their community and potentially progress to the regional stage.
