Randfontein Rugby Club captain Keagan Fortune says the team’s unity and commitment have been key to an unbeaten league campaign as they prepare for the Grand Challenge playoffs on Saturday, August 8.

Fortune credited the squad’s willingness to buy into the coaches’ vision and the strong bonds formed throughout the season for their success.

“I’m immensely proud of how far we’ve come and the manner in which we’ve grown,” he said.

“It’s taken a lot of sacrifice and tough conversations. One of the biggest factors has been buying into the coaches’ plans and building strong bonds and connections with one another.”

Although the team has remained unbeaten, Fortune said the focus now shifts to the knockout stages, where every match carries added pressure, and there is no room for complacency.

For the captain, lifting the Grand Challenge trophy would be a special achievement for both the players and the club.

“It’ll mean a lot. I think it’s been a couple of years since the club last won the league, so to be able to do it would be really special,” he said.

Fortune also thanked the local community for its continued support.

“All I can say is thank you. Thank you for always showing up and for never stopping believing. We’ll need you more over the next couple of weeks.”

Action gets under way at Greenhills Stadium at 14:30, with the third team hosting Raiders Rugby Club. The second team travels to Northam Wolves Rugby Club, while the first team faces Wits University Rugby at 16:00 for a place in the semi-finals.

With confidence high and home support behind them, Randfontein will be aiming to cap an outstanding season by lifting the Grand Challenge trophy.
