Local artist takes the spotlight

He classifies his music as soul music, which is a mixture of various other genres such as kwaito, house, cultural music and gospel.

MK Akimi is a local artist who dedicated his life to pursuing his dreams and uses his success as an artist to motivate and inspire the youth through his music and lyrics.

According to MK, he started singing at the age of 10. Since then his love and passion for music just grew stronger.

After discovering his great talent, he joined the church choir and soon after becamr involved in his primary school and community choir.

“That is when I realised that I want to make a living out of singing,” says MK.

He classifies his music as soul music, which is a mixture of various other genres such as kwaito, house, cultural music and gospel. With more than 20 years of experience as an upcoming artist, MK worked alongside various well-known artists such as Zola 7.

He explains that he worked with Zola for four years, after which he suggested that he should record his own album.

“Aside from the work I did with Zola, I also had the privilege of working with musicians such as Zulu-Boy, Malik and various other great names in the industry. I also had the opportunity to go to Brazil where Zola and I entertained the Brazilian community. It was a great experience and contributed to my decision of becoming a full-time artist,” says MK.

He tries to do his part for charity, which is why he also performs at charity events as his dream is not only to pursue a career in the music industry, but also to help eliminate poverty in his community.

His debut album, City of Choice is due for release in November and he explains that it is all thanks to God that he got the opportunity to record this album.

“My motto in life is to keep following the fire that is burning in your soul. That fire is God’s way of inspiring us. Through that inspiration I was able to accomplish my dreams and I want to encourage everyone to live by this motto and reach for their dreams,” says MK.
