Help Kagiso reach his music dreams

Mzansi Arts and Media Awards finalist Kagiso Segone (38), needs the community’s votes to bag a win and make his dreams come true.

Kagiso was inspired by both his parents and brother and he grew up in a musical family.

“In my family, music was embraced as a way of life and I could not escape the influence. I then decided to pursue it professionally. During my high school years, I won a school rap competition whereafter I began recording songs,” he explained.

He further mentioned that his biggest influences include life and people in general because of the different experiences, perspectives and stories. He mostly draws inspiration from personal experiences as well as those of others.

It has been a long journey with many ups and downs. It is a tough career to pursue.

“Some of the pivotal moments include when I began performing and sharing a stage with national artists and DJs,” he expressed.

He added that he usually writes songs every day and the process comes naturally. He also works with different producers. He records at various studios and performs on multiple platforms, whereafter he promotes himself on social media. He also attends music workshops at AMPD Studios in Johannesburg.

“I’m a perfectionist, so I struggle to know when a song is done. I usually just test it out with different listeners, and then I will have a direction. I like to tackle themes such as the everyday struggles that people go through and following one’s passion or dreams. Giving hope and working hard are also prominent themes in my work, as well as the importance of unity and love in my community.

My music is a direct reflection of my reality and state of mind as it is based on the expression of my actual feelings, exploring different emotions while drawing from pain and joy that I experience daily,” he said.

He hopes that his music can uplift people. He likes to think that his work keeps people through their hardships by empowering them with inspiration, education and mostly entertainment.

Currently, Kagiso is a top five finalist in the Mzansi Arts and Media Awards. He explained that this is an annual event celebrating upcoming artists across the country. He was encouraged by a friend who believed in him to join the competition.
