Westonaria High Grade 12s reflect on final exams
Five Grade 12 learners from Hoërskool Westonaria High School share their experiences as they tackle their final examinations and look towards the future.
As they prepare to complete their school careers, five Grade 12 learners from Hoërskool Westonaria High School face their final examinations with a mixture of nerves, confidence and uncertainty about what lies ahead.
With matriculants across the country having started their final examinations, Morongwe Gugile, Patrick Agbohla, Lisa Mjikeliso, Ilive Makhwelana and Olwethu Thafeni shared their experiences of preparing for the examinations, the subjects causing them concern and their hopes for life after school.
For Gugile, preparation has been going well, although the thought of writing life sciences still makes her nervous. Patrick Agbohla shared a similar concern, identifying mathematics as the subject that makes him most anxious as he works towards completing his matric year.
While particular subjects may bring added pressure, Lisa Mjikeliso is approaching the examination period by focusing on one paper at a time. Rather than allowing the full examination schedule to overwhelm her, she is concentrating on each examination as it comes.
Ilive Makhwelana, meanwhile, expressed confidence in the preparation plan she has put in place. Her approach highlights the importance of staying organised and trusting the work completed throughout the year.
However, the challenges facing matriculants extend beyond the examination room. Olwethu Thafeni said that, although preparation is important, she is also nervous about life after school, particularly whether learners will secure places at universities and colleges to continue their studies.
Her concerns were shared by the other four learners, reflecting the uncertainty many matriculants experience as they approach the end of their school careers and consider the opportunities available to them.
The final examinations are an important test of learners’ knowledge and preparation, but they also represent a transition into a new stage of life. Alongside the pressure to perform academically, matriculants must begin thinking about further education and the decisions that will shape their futures.
For the five Westonaria learners, the immediate priority remains taking the examinations one paper at a time. As they work towards completing their final year of high school, they are balancing the demands of the examination period with their hopes and concerns about the opportunities that await them beyond the classroom.
