Curro Hazeldean recently celebrated the birthday of their headmaster, Dr Hennie Rheeders, with a special charity event. According to the organiser of the event, Talana Smith, Rheeders’ birthday is celebrated with a community project each year, but this year’s event was all about the animals. The celebration was held on 25 April, and the school donated blankets, food, toys and other necessities to the Wetnose Animal Rescue Centre.
The aim of celebrating in this way is to prove to the children that everyone can make a difference, especially if they work together. Rheeders was given an honorary spot on stage, with a purple crown and Dalmatian-themed birthday cake for the occasion, while the day’s proceedings were led by deputy headmaster Roux Viljoen.
Wetnose’s Tarryn Smith and Mr Wiggles thanked the school for their donations and explained what their organisation did and how children could help save the animals. “Our primary function is to save lives, so thank you for the donations. You guys are the angels that will feed our animals at Wetnose,” Smith said.
Wetnose also received a monetary donation from the school that Rheeders handed over before their departure. The rest of the day included birthday wishes from the students, presents and the school singing happy birthday to Rheeders with the help of Buster die Brak.
