Thieves target, vandalise Eskom infrastructure during lockdown

The power utility said it was worried about the theft and vandalism that caused power supply interruptions.

Power utility Eskom has raised concerns about an increase in the theft and vandalism of its infrastructure in the province during the lockdown.

“The theft and vandalism of the network and equipment do not only result in outages that cause an inconvenience to the public, but also have a significantly negative impact on our efforts to provide a much-needed service to essential workers and residents,” said Eskom Gauteng maintenance and operations senior manager Motlhabane Ramashi.

He said recently the power utility experienced supply interruptions as a result of the theft and vandalism.

Ramashi said they were working closely with law enforcement and joint operations centres to contain the criminality.

“We call upon members of the community to report any crimes, including illegal connections and meter-bypasses, to Eskom on 0860-037-566 or the police on 0800-112-722,” he said.
